What drag factor should I use on a Concept2 erg?

Junior and beginner athletes should sit lower (100-115) to learn rhythm without overloading the back. Drag factor 200 is not "harder training" - it is just a heavier load that recruits a different muscle profile and risks injury when used habitually. Drag factor myths
Myth: Higher drag = harder training = better results
False. Higher drag changes the muscle recruitment profile (more force, lower rate) but does not magically make you fitter. Most coaches set their squad on drag 130-140 because that matches the boat feel, not because it is "harder". Training at drag 200 just means you grind through fewer strokes per minute and risk lower-back injury without aerobic benefit.
Myth: Damper level 10 = drag 200
No. The damper lever (1-10) opens or closes vents on the flywheel. Drag factor depends on damper position, flywheel cleanliness, altitude and humidity. Damper 10 might give you drag 175 on one erg and drag 220 on another. Always check the actual drag factor in the PM5 menu (Display Drag Factor) and adjust the damper to hit your target number.
Myth: Drag factor changes your watts at a given split
False. Watts at a given /500m split is set by the Concept2 power formula (watts = 2.80 / (split/500)^3). A 1:50 split is about 263 watts at drag 110 or drag 140. What changes is how the load feels, the rate you settle at, and which muscles tire first.
Myth: Boat-class drag factor matches the boat feel exactly
Approximately. Concept2 publishes rough boat-class equivalents (single 1x ~ drag 100-110, eight 8+ ~ drag 130-140) but these are guides, not exact equivalents. The erg cannot replicate water resistance perfectly. Use boat-class drag as a starting point, not a religion.
How drag factor works
What drag factor measures
Drag factor is the rate of flywheel deceleration after each drive. Concept2 calculates it stroke-by-stroke and displays the average in the PM5 monitor menu. Higher drag = flywheel slows faster between strokes = more force needed at the catch to spin it back up. The Concept2 ergometer measures and reports this independent of the damper lever position.
How to set drag factor
Press Menu on the PM5, choose More Options, then Display Drag Factor. Pull a few strokes - the number appears once the monitor has data. Adjust the damper lever (1-10 on the flywheel) up or down to nudge drag toward your target. Recheck after a minute of warm-up. Same erg + same damper position can give different drag depending on flywheel cleanliness; check before every test.

Concept2 published rough mappings: single sculls and lightweight boats sit around drag 100-110, men's pair / four around 115-125, men's eight 130-140. These are starting points, not religion. Is drag factor 130 the same on every Concept2 erg?
Yes - drag factor is an absolute measure of flywheel deceleration, calibrated identically across every Concept2 erg sold. Drag 130 on a brand-new Model E in Henley feels the same as drag 130 on a 15-year-old Model D in a Manchester gym. The damper lever position needed to hit drag 130 will differ (older flywheels often need a higher damper number) but the actual training load is the same.
Should beginners train at drag 200?
No. Beginners should sit at drag 100-115 while they learn rhythm, posture and the catch. Training at high drag with poor technique is the fastest route to lower-back injury and ingrains a muscling-the-handle habit that takes years to coach out. Build technique at low drag, then add drag once your stroke is consistent.
What drag factor do GB Rowing and Olympic athletes use?
GB Rowing senior men typically test 2k at drag 130-140. Senior women and lightweights at drag 110-120. These figures are public from various national-team training documents and Concept2 athlete profiles. They settle there because it matches the boat feel of their event class, not because it is "elite drag".
Does drag factor affect calorie burn?
Indirectly. The Concept2 calorie formula (kcal/hr = (watts * 4) + 300) depends only on watts, and watts at a given split is fixed by the power formula. So at the same split, drag does not change calorie display. But you will naturally settle at different watts at different drag factors because rate and stroke length shift, which then changes calorie burn over a session.
How often should I check drag factor?
Every test piece. Flywheel dust accumulates and changes the relationship between damper lever and actual drag factor over weeks. Vacuuming the flywheel cage every couple of months is good practice. For steady-state sessions, set it once at the start of the session and trust it. For 2k tests and benchmark pieces, recheck during warm-up to make sure you are landing on your target number.
