What is Stroke Rate?

Stroke rate is the number of strokes per minute (spm) a rowing crew rates. Typical rates range from 18 spm in steady-state training to 44 spm in a sprint finish. Stroke rate is distinct from boat speed - the two metrics are linked through distance per stroke.

Definition and units

Stroke rate is measured in strokes per minute (spm). One stroke is one complete cycle of catch, drive, finish and recovery. A crew rating 32 spm takes 32 complete strokes every 60 seconds.

Cox boxes, ergometer monitors and GPS units all display stroke rate live. The number is updated every few strokes and shown to one decimal place (e.g. 32.4 spm) on most modern units.

How stroke rate is measured

In a coxed boat, a small magnetic sensor on the stroke seat's slide triggers each time the seat reaches the catch. The cox box counts triggers and converts to strokes per minute. The number is shown live on the cox box display.

On an ergometer, the rate is derived from the position and timing of the chain pull. The Concept2 PM5 monitor shows rate, split, watts and calories live during every piece.

GPS units (NK SpeedCoach, Coxmate GPS) without a slide sensor derive rate from the boat's motion patterns - the boat surges forward on each drive, so the GPS can pick out individual strokes from the velocity trace.

Typical stroke rates by training type

Standard training and racing rates for senior club and international rowing:

  • UT2 (steady state): 18-22 spm. Long-distance aerobic work, the bulk of winter training volume.
  • UT1 (firm steady state): 22-26 spm. Higher quality aerobic work, building lactate threshold.
  • AT (anaerobic threshold): 26-30 spm. Threshold pieces, sustained race-pace work.
  • Head race pace: 28-32 spm. The rate crews settle to over 4-7km of head racing.
  • Regatta race pace: 36-40 spm. The settled rate during the middle of a 2km race.
  • Sprint finish or start: 40-44 spm. The rate crews push through the first 20 strokes from a standing start, and the final 250m of a 2km race.

Drive-recovery ratio

Each stroke has two phases: the drive (blade in the water, legs and back driving the handle) and the recovery (slide back to the catch with blades feathered out of the water). The ratio of time spent on the drive vs the recovery shifts with rate.

At low rates (18-22 spm) the recovery is much longer than the drive - typically a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio. The crew has plenty of time on the slide to set up the next catch cleanly. At race rate (36-40 spm) the recovery shortens dramatically, and the ratio approaches 1:1. Crews that maintain a long, controlled recovery at high rates have better boat run than crews that rush the slide and end up working harder for less speed.

How rate affects boat speed

Stroke rate and boat speed are linked through distance per stroke (DPS). DPS = boat speed divided by stroke rate. The same crew can row faster at a lower rate with longer, more powerful strokes (high DPS), or faster at a higher rate with shorter strokes (lower DPS but more frequent power application).

Above a certain rate (typically around 40 spm for most crews), additional rate costs power because the recovery becomes too short to apply full force on each drive. The boat actually slows down. Coaches and crews work out the optimal race rate empirically - the rate at which boat speed is highest. Going above it makes the boat slower, not faster.

Training rate progressions

Rate ladders are a standard rowing training session. The crew rows 5 minutes at 18 spm, 5 minutes at 20, 5 at 22, 5 at 24 - building up the rates the crew uses in racing. Rate-locked pieces (e.g. 4 x 1km at 32 spm) train the crew to hold a target rate under pressure.

Stroke seats and coxes use the cox box to verify the rate is correct through each piece. Crew lineup and session planning tools let coaches set rate targets per piece in advance, and the cox confirms execution from the cox box display.

What is a typical rowing stroke rate?

Typical stroke rates by training type: steady-state UT2 work runs at 18-22 spm, UT1 at 22-26 spm, AT (anaerobic threshold) at 26-30 spm, head race pace at 28-32 spm, regatta race pace at 36-40 spm, and a sprint finish or starting strokes at 40-44 spm. Senior international eights settle race pace around 38-40 spm; junior and club crews tend to settle 1-2 spm lower.

What is the difference between stroke rate and boat speed?

Stroke rate is how often the crew takes a stroke (strokes per minute). Boat speed is how fast the boat moves through the water (metres per second or 500m split). They are related but not the same. The same crew can row faster at a lower rate with longer, more powerful strokes (high distance per stroke), or faster at a higher rate with shorter strokes. Distance per stroke (boat speed divided by stroke rate) is often a better measure of crew efficiency than rate alone.

What is the drive-recovery ratio?

The drive-recovery ratio is the time spent on the drive (blade in the water) compared to the recovery (slide back to the catch).
