How does the Concept2 weight adjustment work?

Concept2 adjusts scores with adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222, where 270lb (122kg) is the heavyweight anchor. A 75kg (165lb) rower who pulls 7:00 comes out at 6:30 adjusted. Extra body mass helps on the ergo, but with diminishing returns, and the small exponent models that curve. Australian squads use the adjusted figure to rank mixed-weight groups on a single list.

Why 0.222?

That 0.222 exponent came out of regression work on years of Concept2 World Ranking submissions. Mass buys force on a stationary flywheel, yet the payoff tapers: double an athlete's weight and the formula moves their time only around 15%. That gentle slope matches what Australian coaches observe between 75kg lightweights and 95kg openweight athletes, from school ergo testing right up to senior international level.

Where the formula breaks down

No formula turns an untrained 60kg beginner into a match for a fit 90kg openweight - it presumes a properly conditioned ergo athlete. Calibration also gets shaky outside roughly 130lb to 250lb, where ranking data is sparse. And it describes the machine, not the water: shell speed answers to drag and rigging, so lightweight finals on the course are never decided on 0.222-adjusted times.

Does the formula work for women?

It works on mass alone, so the same maths applies to women and men. Why does my adjusted time differ from Concept2's online ranking?

Because the World Rankings add an age-graded step after the weight step. Take a 50-year-old at 75kg with a raw 7:00 2k: weight adjustment lands around 6:30, then the age factor trims further by bracket. How much faster does the adjustment make a lightweight's time?

At 75kg (165lb) the credit runs to about 7%, so a raw 7:00 2k reads 6:30 adjusted. Drop to 60kg (132lb) and the credit grows to roughly 14%, taking a 7:30 down to around 6:30. Credits climb as weight falls, then level off at the light end because the exponent stays small.

Should coaches use adjusted or raw scores for crew selection?

Use each where it fits. Heavyweight and openweight seats go on raw 2k, since absolute output predicts boat speed. Lightweight crews race inside a weight limit, so raw times within category settle those seats. The adjusted column matters when one ladder must cover a whole mixed squad - say 30 athletes from 60kg to 95kg - and most Australian coaches keep both columns on the selection sheet.
