New Norfolk Rowing Club was founded in 1928 by Dr David I Fitzpatrick, captain and stroke of its first eight. It rows on the River Derwent from 5 Page Avenue at the New Norfolk Esplanade.
The town's rowing history predates the club. The New Norfolk Regatta Association held its first Boxing Day Regatta in 1854, with rowing included in the programme.
The club aims to increase participation and keep fees low through fundraising. Its current offer includes student coaching, regattas on the Derwent and community rowing events.
The Derwent Valley Boat House opened on 23 January 2021 after the club relocated from its long-term home on the opposite side of the river. The Governor of Tasmania, Kate Warner, formally opened the new facility.
The boat house can host social and business events, weddings, conferences and seminars. It also supports dragon-boat paddling and kayaking, and outside schools have used it for rowing camps.
New Norfolk has supported student rowing at Ogilvie High, New Town High and Elizabeth College. Olympic medallist and world champion Kate Hornsey was also identified at the opening as a former club member.
