Tamar Rowing Club was formed in Launceston in 1876 when Tamar Boating Club, established in 1870, and Cataract Rowing Club, established in 1874, agreed to combine. Work on its first clubhouse began in 1877.

The club is based at 14 West Tamar Road, Trevallyn, and Rowing Tasmania lists it as a current Launceston club. Its membership covers senior and masters competitors, non-competitive adults, and youth and junior rowers outside school programmes.

Members can use club boats, blades, ergometers and gym equipment subject to their category and coaching arrangements. Competitive members can race for Tamar in Rowing Tasmania pennant and local regattas.

T. H. Bourke became Tasmania's first representative in the Australian sculling championship and won the event in 1902-03, 1903-04 and 1904-05. In 1905-06 Tamar won the first Tasmanian Rowing Association State Pennant.

The club won the Stewards Challenge Cup at Melbourne Henley in 1909-10, becoming the first interstate club crew to win it. Its 1928-29 season brought state senior titles in eights, fours and pairs, both association pennants and another Stewards Challenge Cup.

Tamar's facilities have continued to evolve to support rowing development. A later alteration reused the ground floor and added clubrooms and amenities on the first floor.
