About this club
Torrens Rowing Club began at an inaugural meeting in Adelaide on 6 February 1903, when the proposed name was Torrens Boating Club. Around 40 members bought the former Banks Rowing Club shed and eight boats before taking to the water.
The club now rows from Victoria Drive on Torrens Lake and also has a boat-shed bay at West Lakes. It offers social and competitive rowing, two boat sheds, a gym, a fleet and coached training.
Accredited coaches run structured Learn to Row programmes on Torrens Lake several times each year. Torrens also says it was the first South Australian club to offer coaching for adaptive rowing.
Five Torrens oarsmen, plus the coxswain, coach and manager, were selected for South Australia's 1937 King's Cup crew, which won at Murray Bridge. From 1957 to 1965 the club won eight consecutive senior fours titles, seven consecutive senior eights titles and six consecutive senior premierships.
Women were admitted as active members in 1983. The club's history records two members and a coach winning bronze in the women's coxed four at the Los Angeles Olympics, and says 46 members have been selected for Australia, including eight Olympians.
In its 2003 centenary season Torrens won both men's and women's First Grade State Championships and premierships, plus five gold, four silver and two bronze medals at the national championships. The Victoria Drive function centre has a licensed bar and capacity for up to 120 people.
