John McGlashan College

Dunedin, Otago

Rows from the Otago Rowing Club on the harbour in Dunedin, with boys' crews from John McGlashan College.

About this club

John McGlashan College rowers boat out of the Otago Rowing Club in Dunedin and train on the harbour, often in early morning sessions.

New rowers at the boys' college start with have-a-go sessions in late August and early September, then a learn to row programme that runs from September to the end of October and finishes with a regatta at Twizel. A January training camp at Lake Waihola leads into the South Island Secondary Schools Championships and the Maadi Cup, and crews also race on Otago Harbour, Lake Dunstan and Lake Ruataniwha.

In August 2025 the school reported two gold and four bronze medals from the South Island Secondary Schools Championships. A novice coxed octuple finished second in its final at the 2025 Aoraki 1k regatta on Lake Ruataniwha. In 2018 the squad took two national titles and six South Island medals.
