Avon County Rowing Club is based at Saltford Rowing Centre on the River Avon, with a postal address on Bath Road in Saltford. The club is affiliated to British Rowing and a secondary club history dates its foundation to 1973.

The club's published programme covers adult and junior beginners, competitive squads, social rowing, indoor rowing and adaptive rowing. Existing rowers, scullers, coxes and coaches of any age and ability can apply, including people returning to the sport.

Adult beginners first attend a taster session covering the site, equipment, rowing terminology, an indoor rowing machine and water sessions. Those continuing learn in both individual and crew boats, beginning with sculling before progressing to sweep rowing. Applicants must be able to swim at least 100 metres in light clothing.

After the beginner course, members can enter the development squad for planned outings and further instruction. They later move into men's, women's or social rowing according to their experience and ambitions. Experienced prospective members can arrange a trial outing on the club's stretch of the Avon.

Avon County members can scull or sweep, individually or in crews, and the club advertises both competitive and social participation. Its competition examples extend from regional racing to the Tideway Heads, British Masters, National Schools Regatta, Henley Women's Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta.

The club runs four annual events: Avon Spring Head, Bristol Avon Regatta, Avon Bluefriars Small Boats Head and Avon Autumn Head. The regatta uses a 1,000-metre course immediately upstream of the boathouse; the club says it moved from Saltford to Bristol docks in the 1970s and returned to Saltford in 2008.
