About this club

Bideford Amateur Rowing Club is based at 25 The Quay in Bideford. Founded in 1882 and known as The Reds, the club has occupied its Quay boathouse since 1939.

The official history describes a three-storey waterfront clubhouse. A later extension and internal improvement scheme added training space and improved the changing facilities.

Prospective rowers can take a free three-week trial. Current membership categories cover senior and student rowers, older juniors, a junior academy for school years 7 to 11, and associated fitness members.

The club encourages rowing members to hold British Rowing membership. It also invites people to join as rowers, officials, coaches or volunteers.

Bideford records more than 50 local championships and names the National Daily Herald Cup in 1955 among its early successes. Its history gallery also identifies a 1955 NARA championship crew and club crews from the 1960s through to the 1990s.

Junior members can compete at local and national regattas, and the club says its juniors regularly represent the West of England at the Junior Inter-Regional Rowing Regatta. In 2022 the club finished second in the WEARA overall fours championship, while a men's coxed four raced in the 2023 Henley Royal Regatta qualifiers.
