Glasgow Rowing Club was formed on 4 December 1983 through the amalgamation of the Glasgow Argonauts Boat Club (founded in 1924) and the City of Glasgow Rowing Club (founded in 1965, which itself descended from the Glasgow Printers Rowing Club of the early 1900s). The club's colours reflect that heritage: yellow taken from the Glasgow Argonauts, red from the City of Glasgow Rowing Club, and black. When GRC was formed it was based in the East Boathouse on Glasgow Green, before moving to its present site in the Gorbals, funded with help from the National Lottery and Sports Scotland. The club is based in its own boathouse on Silverfir Street in the Gorbals, on the south bank of the River Clyde close to Glasgow Green. It rows a scenic stretch of wide river over 5km in length. Glasgow Rowing Club is affiliated to Scottish Rowing. The club caters for everyone from complete beginners to international rowers, and runs a Learn to Row course covering the basics on land and water. Its activity spans recreational rowing, competitive squads, a junior programme, and events and community work, and it supports members into coxing and coaching with training from Scottish Rowing and mentoring from its own coaching team. Over the years the club has produced rowers who have competed on the world stage, including Polly Swann, a World and European champion who won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and World bronze medallists Lindsay Dick and Sam Scrimgeour. The club hosts its own regatta and head race on the Clyde.
