About this club

London Rowing Club was founded in 1856 to encourage rowing on the River Thames. The new club based itself at Putney, quickly attracted nearly 200 members and won the Grand and Stewards' Challenge Cups in its first full year. Its present boathouse site dates from the club's early years, with the current building opened in 1871 and later extended.

Today the club welcomes men and women across different ages and levels of experience. Its offer covers novice coaching through TopRow, competitive men's and women's squads, Masters racing, recreational rowing and a gym-only membership.

The club's history includes 16 Grand Challenge Cup wins before that event moved beyond genuine club crews, further Henley successes and international medals. It remains based on the Putney Embankment, on the Tideway stretch of the Thames.
