Peterborough City Rowing Club is based at Thorpe Meadows, with a purpose-built 1,000 metre rowing lake and access to more than 10 km of rowable water on the River Nene. The club has men's, women's and junior squads and competes at local, national and international level.
The present club was founded in 1948 after a city council-backed water-sports regatta, although competitive rowing in Peterborough is recorded much earlier. It began in a timber shed on the River Embankment with borrowed boats, built its first purpose-built boathouse in 1961, and moved to the current Thorpe Meadows facility in 1983.
The lake supports club training, selection trials and major regattas. Members also have a gym, showers and social facilities, while the River Nene provides the course for the club's annual Head of the Nene.
