Upper Thames Rowing Club is based on Remenham Lane near Henley-on-Thames, on the Henley reach of the River Thames. Peter and Diane Sutherland developed the idea, and local club captains agreed in April 1963 to create a centre for experienced rowers with national and international ambitions.

The new club began with a coxed four bought for £15, an old Oxford eight, eight rowers and a cox. It rented an old Henley regatta boom shed as its first boathouse and entered its first Henley Royal Regatta crew in the Thames Challenge Cup in 1964.

The club says it has entered at least one Henley Royal Regatta crew every year since that debut. Its clubhouse was built in 1985, and a two-level extension replaced the boom shed in 2009.

Upper Thames remains focused on high-level domestic competition across age categories. Membership is open broadly, but the club advises complete beginners and purely recreational rowers that other clubs may offer a more structured entry pathway.

Its history records Henley finals in 2008 and 2013, followed by wins in both the Britannia and Wyfold Challenge Cups in 2014. It also names Olympic and world-championship rowers among past and present members.

The club runs Henley Masters Regatta after Henley Royal and an autumn head in October. Its current formal address is Upper Thames Rowing Club, Remenham Lane, Remenham, Berkshire, RG9 3DB.
