The rowing scene in Cardiff
Cardiff is the heart of Welsh rowing. The River Taff cuts through the city from Llandaff Weir down past Bute Park and the Principality Stadium into Cardiff Bay - a 500-acre freshwater lake created in 1999 by the Cardiff Bay Barrage. Senior community clubs row the Taff at Llandaff while the university squads boat from the sheltered Bay, with Welsh Rowing (the national governing body) headquartered in the city.

Two distinct stretches of water serve Cardiff rowing. Llandaff Weir to Llandaff North bridge is a 1,200-metre stretch of the River Taff used by the senior community clubs - two obtuse bends running upstream from the weir. Below the city, the Cardiff Bay Barrage (completed 1999) impounds the Taff and Ely to create a 500-acre sheltered freshwater lake, used by the university squads and for major regattas. Above the Llandaff weir the river runs too shallow for racing shells.
