The rowing scene in Lincoln
Lincoln has a small but tight-knit rowing scene built around the River Witham as it threads through the city and widens into Brayford Pool. The Lincoln Rowing Centre on Spa Road is the modern flagship - opened in 2006, it houses three on-water clubs and hosts the annual Lincoln Head on a quiet, canalised stretch of the Witham that runs straight past the cathedral city.

The River Witham through Lincoln is fully canalised, with consistent depth, no tide and minimal current - ideal for steady-state training and head racing. The Witham broadens in the city centre into Brayford Pool, the natural pool the Romans widened into a port in the 1st century, today bordered by the University of Lincoln. The rowing course runs east of the city centre between Stamp End Lock and Bardney, well clear of the pleasure-boat traffic on the Pool itself.
