The rowing scene in Southampton

Southampton rows on the tidal River Itchen, which runs down through the city to meet Southampton Water and the Solent. Three clubs share the water: Southampton Coalporters ARC, founded in 1875 and the oldest club in the city, sits beside Northam Bridge, while Itchen Imperial and Southampton Amateur Rowing Club row the same stretch. All three belong to the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association and race the South Coast circuit from Swanage round to Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, alongside inland head races.

Key numbers

The River Itchen rises near Cheriton in Hampshire and flows through Winchester before reaching the northern edge of Southampton. It becomes tidal below Woodmill, near Mansbridge, and from there widens through the city past Cobden Bridge, Northam Bridge and the Itchen Bridge before emptying into Southampton Water - the tidal estuary that runs out to the Solent and forms part of the internationally protected Solent and Southampton Water Ramsar wetland. This tidal lower Itchen is the home water for Southampton's clubs, who also take to the open coastal water of the Solent for the summer regatta season.

Software for Southampton rowing clubs

Most of the 3 clubs above still run their boat booking, member admin, session attendance and crew lineups on a combination of spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups and printed sheets on the boathouse wall. Row HQ is rowing-club management software built specifically for clubs like these.

If your committee is hitting the predictable problems - lineups in the wrong file, fees uncollected, attendance unrecorded, captain on holiday with the password - book a 30-minute demo. We've ported clubs from spreadsheets in a weekend.
