Ballarat City Rowing Club was formed on 17 November 1870 and rows from Boatshed 30 on the eastern side of Lake Wendouree. Its own history says the club has occupied the same lakeside site through three different sheds.

The club has more than 100 recreational, junior and masters members. It runs squad training for all ages, year-round Learn2Row programmes and local and interstate regatta campaigns.

Its facilities include a fleet of training and racing equipment and an indoor rowing studio. The club says it continues to reinvest in boats, ergometers and facilities.

In the 1980s Ballarat City won five Victorian Rowing Association premierships, 43 state championships and ten national championships. Anthony Edwards became its first Olympic representative in 1996 and won bronze, while Rachael Taylor later won silver at the Sydney Olympics after beginning at the club.

The club won the 2019-20 Champion Club Premiership, its first since 1987. The award was based on the most wins in the Victorian regatta season.

Ballarat City hosted international crews before the 1956 Olympic rowing regatta on Lake Wendouree. Its membership handbook also records the club rebuilding in time for those Games after its shed was destroyed in 1950.
