About this club
Essendon Rowing Club is based at 48 The Boulevard in Moonee Ponds. Its current programme caters for beginners through to elite rowers, with both social and competitive participation.
The club was founded at a meeting in 1880. Its earliest members hired boats from Spong's Boat Shed before the club built facilities of its own.
Essendon remained at its first site until 1920, when it moved to its current location. Essendon Ladies Rowing Club formed in 1923, and the two clubs merged and incorporated in November 1986.
The club won the Victorian Championship Four in 1910, while Horace Stevens won the Champion Sculls and represented Victoria the following year. Essendon also won a Maiden Eight at Barwon and Junior Eights at Henley in 1911.
Current entry points include adult and junior Learn to Row. The junior programme normally runs on Sundays over four to six weeks, while the website also provides registration, boat-booking and event services for members.
Essendon continues to host competition. Rowing Manager identifies it as host of the 2025 Saltwater Challenge Regatta.
