About this club

Fremantle Rowing Club is based at 75 Riverside Road, East Fremantle. The club focuses on athlete development, coaching and equipment while presenting rowing as a sport that can continue throughout life. It says athletes should become self-directed and accountable within the club's support structure.

The club's own material and Rowing WA use 1886 as the establishment year. A detailed historical study records a formal meeting at Oddfellows Hall on 19 July 1887, naming Douglas Gawler as a founder and describing the first shed opening in April 1888.

Early Fremantle crews won all but one event at the club's first local inter-club meeting. The history records the club's first eight in 1906 and delivery of the first eight built in Western Australia in 1939.

The club has run junior athlete development for about 50 years. Its schools program supports All Schools racing at Champion Lakes and offers development routes for students whose schools do not operate their own rowing programs.

Prospective experienced rowers may attend up to three visitor sessions before joining, while beginners are directed to a separate Learn to Row program. The club's schools material also describes links with WAIS talent identification and rowing-specific physical education activity.
