About this club
Mercantile Rowing Club is based at Boathouse 5 on Boathouse Drive beside the Yarra in Melbourne. The club presents itself as a high-performance rowing organisation with a long record of developing Australian representatives.
The club was formed at Young and Jackson's hotel in September 1880 under the name Junior Warehouseman's Rowing Club. It adopted the name Mercantile Rowing Club one year later.
Mercantile says it has supplied athletes to every Australian Olympic rowing team since 1956. Its roll of Olympic medallists includes members of the Oarsome Foursome at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996, gold medallists at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, and a women's pair silver medallist at London 2012.
The Mercantile Foundation was established in 1986 under founding chairman Jim Sprigg. The club says the foundation has helped renovate the boathouse, develop its boat fleet and support athletes selected for international competition.
Recent Rowing Victoria results show Mercantile second in the 2025 senior premiership on 263 points and second in the grade premiership on 453. The club's calendar and news also cover major head races including the Head of the Charles and Head of the Yarra.
