About this club
Richmond Rowing Club is a community club on the Yarra at 7 Boathouse Drive, Melbourne. It reports more than 140 members aged from 18 to 80, with Learn to Row, recreational rowing and competition for experienced athletes. The club describes itself as the fourth-oldest continuously operating rowing club in the world.
The club was established in 1863. Its history describes Jim Barton winning Henley Silver Sculls and Victorian championships between 1919 and 1924, establishing an early record of sculling success.
Women were first admitted in 1977. Coxswain Sue Lee became Richmond's second Olympian when she steered the Australian women's coxed four to bronze at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Rowing Australia identifies that result as Australia's first Olympic medal in women's rowing.
Richmond received Rowing Australia's Club of the Year award in 2000. Its boathouse was redeveloped and reopened in 2014, a project recorded as a major modern milestone in the club's published history.
The club combines beginner courses with coached squad rowing and regatta entry. Its 2022-23 annual report records second place in the Rowing Victoria Club Grade Premiership, while 2025 club news reports podium finishes at the Melbourne Head regatta.
