Comparing a 70kg lightweight's 2k directly against a 95kg openweight's 2k tells you nothing useful. This calculator applies the Concept2 weight-adjustment formula so the lightweight at 6:40 and the openweight at 6:25 are measured on the same standard - which is what NZ club ergo trials and mixed-squad selection actually need.

How does the Concept2 weight adjustment work?

Concept2 publishes a single formula: adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222. The 270lb (122kg) figure is the fixed openweight reference. Feed in a 165lb (75kg) lightweight who rowed 7:00 and the formula outputs a 6:30 adjusted score. The logic is that body mass gives a diminishing advantage on a fixed flywheel: more mass means more force available, but the relationship is not proportional, so the 0.222 exponent captures where the curve flattens out. The Concept2 weight-adjustment formula

Concept2 publishes the formula: adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222. The 270lb reference is the fixed openweight benchmark. A lighter rower earns a credit - their adjusted time comes out faster than their raw time. A heavier rower sees their adjusted time move slower than their actual time, reflecting that a portion of their raw score came from mass advantage rather than pure aerobic capacity. Why 0.222?

The 0.222 exponent was fitted empirically against a large sample of Concept2 World Ranking scores. On a static flywheel, extra body mass genuinely helps - heavier rowers generate more absolute force and carry more momentum through the recovery. But the benefit is sub-linear: the gains from mass flatten out well before you reach double the weight of a lightweight. At 0.222, doubling your body weight shifts your time by only about 15%, which lines up with what is actually observed between lightweight (~75kg) and openweight (~95kg) crews at every level from junior club through to senior international.

When this matters most

Where the formula breaks down

The formula assumes a trained, erg-competent rower. It will not produce a meaningful result for a recreational rower who has never done structured erg training, regardless of their weight. The underlying data also thins at extremes - below 130lbs or above 250lbs the calibration is less reliable. Most importantly, the formula applies to the erg only. On-water shell speed involves hydrodynamic drag, rigging geometry and crew coordination in ways that the 0.222 exponent does not capture, which is why on-water lightweight racing is not conducted using adjusted times.

What is the reference weight of 270 lbs?

270lbs (122kg) is the heavyweight reference Concept2 hardcoded into the formula. It sits above most senior openweight men, which means the adjustment shaves time from virtually every rower, with the shave being smallest for the heaviest athletes. The reference does not change when you alter your own inputs - it is the fixed anchor the formula calculates against.

Does the formula work for women?

Yes. The formula operates entirely on body weight with no gender variable. When comparing across genders fairly you would normally layer on a gender-graded factor in addition to the weight adjustment. Why does my adjusted time differ from Concept2's online ranking?

Concept2 World Rankings stack an age-graded adjustment on top of the weight adjustment. A 50-year-old 75kg rower posting a 7:00 raw 2k will see two separate steps applied: weight drops the time to roughly 6:30, then age brings it down further based on their age bracket. How much faster does the adjustment make a lightweight's time?

A 75kg (165lbs) rower receives roughly a 7% credit. A 7:00 raw 2k becomes approximately 6:30 adjusted. A 60kg (132lbs) rower receives a larger credit of around 14%, turning a 7:30 raw 2k into roughly 6:30 adjusted. The credit grows as weight decreases but flattens at the lower end because the 0.222 exponent is small enough to keep the curve from becoming extreme.

Should coaches use adjusted or raw scores for crew selection?

Both, depending on the decision at hand. For an openweight eight or four, raw 2k matters most because absolute power output on the erg is the better predictor of on-water contribution. For a lightweight crew, use raw 2k within the category weight limit.
