How does the Concept2 weight adjustment work?

Concept2's adjustment is adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222, anchored to a 270lb (122kg) reference. A 75kg (165lb) rower on 7:00 scores 6:30 adjusted. Extra mass earns diminishing returns on a stationary flywheel, and the small exponent tracks that taper. New Zealand coaches lean on the adjusted number when a Maadi Cup squad or a club trial spans every body size.

The Concept2 weight-adjustment formula

One line does the work: adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222, with 270lb standing in as the openweight anchor. The maths credits smaller rowers with a faster adjusted time and pulls heavier rowers back, on the reasoning that raw mass funded part of the raw score. Why 0.222?

Regression across a huge set of Concept2 World Ranking scores produced the 0.222 figure. Weight is worth real watts on the ergo, but not in proportion to the kilograms: double a rower's mass and the formula concedes only about 15% of time. That restrained slope matches how 75kg lightweights and 95kg openweights actually compare, whether the test happens in a school gym or a national training centre.

When this matters most

Club ergo trials, school squads building towards the Maadi Cup, and university programmes trimming a mixed group before nationals at Lake Karapiro all need one honest ladder. Adjusted scoring lets a coach see whether the 62kg sculler is genuinely outworking the 92kg sweep rower before seat racing settles anything on the water. Individual athletes get the same benefit across a season: if your weight drifts, the adjusted score shows whether fitness moved with it.

Where the formula breaks down

The formula only means something for conditioned erg athletes; feed it an untrained 60kg novice and it will not conjure a score that beats a fit 90kg openweight. Its calibration data also runs out at the edges, below about 130lb and above 250lb. Nor does it transfer to the water - drag, rigging and crew rhythm set shell speed by different rules, which is why adjusted times never decide a lightweight final.

Rowing New Zealand selects official lightweight crews on raw 2k times inside category limits - 72.5kg for men, 59kg for women - so adjusted scores are not the selection currency. Their value sits in everyday coaching: ranking mixed training groups, school trials and club benchmarks. The formula itself is public, published by Concept2 and used in its World Rankings.

What is the reference weight of 270 lbs?

Concept2 built the formula around a 270lb anchor, about 122kg, which outweighs nearly every senior openweight man. Set that high, the anchor means the calculation removes time from practically everyone, with the smallest removals going to the heaviest rowers. The anchor is a constant - your inputs never alter it.

Does the formula work for women?

Yes - weight is the only variable, so the same calculation serves men and women. Ranking across genders fairly usually adds a gender or age factor on top; Concept2 holds separate tables per gender and runs the weight step within each. Why does my adjusted time differ from Concept2's online ranking?

World Rankings add an age-graded layer after the weight layer. A 50-year-old at 75kg with a 7:00 raw 2k gets taken to roughly 6:30 by weight, then further down by their age bracket. This page stops at the weight step on purpose; for the stacked result, put the score through Concept2's own site.

How much faster does the adjustment make a lightweight's time?

Roughly 7% at 75kg (165lb) - a raw 7:00 2k returns as 6:30 adjusted. At 60kg (132lb) the credit is closer to 14%, so a 7:30 raw comes out near 6:30. Lighter rowers earn steeper credits, though the curve settles at the bottom because the exponent is deliberately small.

Should coaches use adjusted or raw scores for crew selection?

Pick the score that matches the decision. Raw 2k fills openweight seats, since absolute output is what moves a shell. Lightweight boats select on raw times within the weight limit. Adjusted scores earn their place when one ranking must span a whole mixed squad - 30 athletes from 60kg to 95kg is common in Kiwi programmes - and most coaches keep raw and adjusted side by side.
