How does the Concept2 weight adjustment work?
Concept2 publishes the formula: adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222. The 270lb reference is the openweight benchmark. A 165lb lightweight rowing 7:00 has an adjusted score of 6:30, putting them on the same scale as a heavier athlete. The formula reflects the diminishing returns of body mass on the erg - heavier rowers benefit from inertia and absolute power, but only up to a point. It is the canonical fair-comparison metric used in NCAA lightweight 2k rankings, varsity recruiting scoring, and the Concept2 World Rankings adjustments.

How the adjustment works
The Concept2 weight-adjustment formula
Concept2 publishes the formula: adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222. The 270lb reference is the openweight benchmark mass. A lighter rower gets credit (their adjusted time is faster than their actual time); a heavier rower's adjusted time is slower than their actual time, on the principle that some of their performance came from raw mass rather than fitness. Why 0.222?
The exponent 0.222 was derived empirically from large sets of Concept2 World Ranking data. It balances two effects: heavier rowers can apply more absolute force (good for erg), but their additional mass costs them less on a fixed flywheel than it would on water. The 0.222 figure is small enough that doubling your body weight only adjusts your time by roughly 15%, which fits observed performance scaling between lightweight (~160lbs men / 130lbs women) and openweight (~210lbs men / 165lbs women) categories at every level from junior to senior international.
When this matters most
NCAA lightweight 2k rankings, IRA / EARC lightweight selection, varsity recruitment scoring across mixed-weight squads, and any internal roster ranking that wants to be fair across body sizes. Coaches selecting lightweight crews use the adjusted score to compare candidates whose raw 2k times would naively favor the heavier athlete. It is also useful for tracking individual progress across a season where body weight changes - your adjusted score isolates fitness change from mass change.
Where the formula breaks down
The formula assumes the rower is actually a competent erg-trained athlete; it does not magically make an unfit 130lb sedentary person beat a fit 200lb openweight. It also breaks at extreme weights (under 130lbs or over 250lbs the data thins out). And the formula is for the erg only - on-water boat speed depends on hydrodynamic drag and rigging that does not scale the same way, which is why lightweight on-water finals are not run at 0.222-adjusted times.

What is the reference weight of 270 lbs?
270lbs is the Concept2 openweight reference used in the formula. It is at the top end of openweight rowing - heavier than most senior openweight men - which means the adjustment subtracts time from almost everyone, with smaller subtractions for lighter rowers. The reference is fixed; it does not change as you adjust the formula.
Does the formula work for women?
Yes, the formula is gender-agnostic - it adjusts on body weight only. To compare across genders fairly, you usually want to combine the weight adjustment with an age-graded or gender-graded factor. Why does my adjusted time differ from Concept2's online ranking?
Concept2 World Rankings apply additional age-graded adjustments on top of the weight adjustment. So a 50-year-old 165lb rower with a 7:00 raw 2k will see two layers of adjustment: weight (down to roughly 6:30 adjusted) and age (further reduction depending on age category). How much faster does the adjustment make a lightweight's time?
A 165lb rower's adjusted time is roughly 7% faster than their actual time. So a 7:00 raw 2k becomes 6:30 adjusted. A 132lb rower gets a roughly 14% credit, dropping a 7:30 raw 2k to about 6:30 adjusted. The adjustment grows steeper as weight decreases, then flattens at the bottom because the exponent is small.
Should coaches use adjusted or raw scores for varsity selection?
Both, in different contexts. For selection in an openweight V8+ or 2V8+, raw 2k matters most because the erg score correlates with on-water power, which scales with absolute output rather than weight-adjusted. For lightweight V8+, raw 2k within the weight category. For ranking across mixed rosters (e.g. picking a top 8 out of a 30-rower training group with mixed body sizes), weight-adjusted scores are fairer. Most coaches use both side by side during recruiting and seat racing.
