How does the Concept2 weight adjustment work?

The published calculation is adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222. Concept2 uses 270lb as its openweight reference mass. A lighter athlete receives a faster adjusted result, while a heavier athlete receives a slower one, separating some of the advantage created by absolute mass from conditioning. Why 0.222?

Concept2 derived the 0.222 exponent from World Ranking results rather than choosing a straight weight ratio. More mass often supports greater absolute force on an erg, yet the stationary flywheel does not penalize that mass as water does. With 0.222, even doubling body weight changes time by roughly 15%. That fits the observed gap between lightweight (~160lbs men / 130lbs women) and openweight (~210lbs men / 165lbs women) categories from junior racing through senior international competition.

Where the formula breaks down

Use the formula among athletes who already know how to row an erg. It cannot make an untrained 130lb person meaningfully comparable with a fit 200lb openweight. Evidence also thins at the extremes, under 130lbs or over 250lbs. Most importantly, this is an erg adjustment. Hull drag, crew weight, rigging, and technique affect boat speed differently, so lightweight on-water finals are never decided by 0.222-adjusted times.

Concept2 fixed 270lbs as the openweight reference for this calculation. That mass sits above most senior openweight men, so almost every athlete receives some time reduction. The size of that reduction changes with body weight. The benchmark itself remains constant each time the formula is applied.

Does the formula work for women?

Yes. Body weight is the only athlete variable in this formula. A fair comparison across genders usually also needs age or gender grading. Lower body weights receive larger credits, but the small exponent prevents the curve from rising without limit.

Should coaches use adjusted or raw scores for varsity selection?

Keep both views. An openweight V8+ or 2V8+ selection depends heavily on raw 2k power. A lightweight V8+ should compare raw 2k results inside its weight category. Across a mixed roster, such as choosing a top 8 from a 30-rower training group, adjusted scores add useful fairness. Coaches usually place both columns beside seat-racing evidence and on-water results.
