About this club

St. John’s Rowing Club is a volunteer non-profit organisation providing slide-seat rowing on Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John’s. It belongs to Rowing Canada Aviron and Rowing Newfoundland.

The club’s strategic plan dates its establishment to 1986. It sits within a much older local rowing tradition on Quidi Vidi, where organised racing was recorded by 1816 and the annual Royal St. John’s Regatta continues.

Current routes include youth learn-to-row, junior development and competition, adult learn-to-row, and adult recreational or masters rowing. On-water sessions are supported by ergometer training, and the club is the main training location for the Newfoundland rowing team.

SJRC also welcomes fixed-seat rowers who want to cross-train or continue after the Royal St. John’s Regatta season. Its strategic plan describes participant groups ranging from high-school and university rowers to junior, adult recreational and masters competitors.

The 2023/24 annual report records junior athletes racing at the ERA Regatta in Montreal and recreational and learn-to-row participants entering exhibition races at the Royal St. John’s Regatta. It also reports year-round programming and a record number of club Come Try events.
