How the percentile placement is built
The percentile comes out of two adjustments stacked on top of your raw time. First, the Concept2 bodyweight handicap: adjusted time = raw time multiplied by your weight in pounds over 270, raised to the power 0.222. Second, the Concept2 Logbook age-grade factor for your age band. Take the combined figure, drop it onto the standards table for your distance, and read off where it lands between novice, club, OUA, U Sports, Royal Canadian Henley and Rowing Canada Aviron tiers.

The Concept2 bodyweight handicap
The published equation is short: handicapped time = raw time * (weight in lb / 270)^0.222. The 270 lb reference is the midpoint Concept2 chose so the formula scales lightweights down and heavyweights up from a single anchor, rather than picking sides. The 0.222 exponent came out of a regression on a very large sample of Logbook scores. The takeaway is that on a static ergo, additional mass is a real but rapidly diminishing advantage, and the curve is steep enough at the low end that ignoring it shortchanges every lightweight rower in a Canadian boathouse.
A worked example: a 70 kg lightweight pulls a 6:30 2k. Run the equation and the handicapped figure lands around 6:14, which is the same handicapped time a 95 kg openweight at 6:30 would carry. Without the handicap, the lightweight looks slower in any flat comparison even though both rowers produced equivalent fitness output on the day. Coaches running heavyweight and lightweight athletes against each other at fall trials in an OUA or RSEQ programme need that levelling step before any seat selection conversation makes sense.
Age-grade coefficients from the Concept2 Logbook
Concept2 Logbook age coefficients climb above age 30, which is roughly where physiology starts to take points off peak erg output. At 30 the factor is 1.000 (raw is the figure). At 40, around 1.034. At 50, around 1.110. At 60, around 1.200. At 70, around 1.320. A 50-year-old at 7:00 2k carries an age-graded equivalent close to 6:18, which slots into the same Logbook percentile bucket as a 30-year-old at 6:18.
Age-graded score is the same idea track athletes get from WMA grading: the raw time is what the athlete actually rowed, the graded time is what the same effort would look like at peak athletic age. Both have value at a Canadian club. A masters rower at Don Rowing Club or Brentwood comparing themselves to a 22-year-old at Western, Brock or UVic gets a meaningful benchmark out of the age-graded number, where the raw split alone would mislead. Coaches handling wide-age squads at a Canadian neighbourhood club lean on the age-graded column when organising winter erg testing so the comparison is fair across the room.
Stacking weight and age into one figure
Both adjustments are multiplicative and order-independent: raw time x weight factor x age factor lands at the same place as raw time x age factor x weight factor. The tool prints four columns side by side. Raw time. Weight-handicapped time. Age-graded time. Combined adjusted time. The combined column is the one to lay against the standards table when reading off a percentile, and it is the number coaches use when normalising a mixed-age, mixed-weight roster for selection.
Where the Canadian percentile bands come from
The standards built into this tool draw on published Concept2 Logbook bands, Rowing Canada Aviron training-centre testing standards, U Sports and OUA championship entry data, RSEQ Quebec university results, CSSRA Championship qualifying figures from Henley Island, and historic Royal Canadian Henley Regatta entry times. None of those sources covers every population perfectly, but each one is honest about which population it describes. A handicapped, age-graded 6:30 from a 22-year-old male openweight sits in the top quartile across the global Concept2 Logbook, and the same conclusion holds across the Canadian datasets.
What the percentile score will not tell you
The tool does not override Rowing Canada Aviron lightweight rules. If the federation defines lightweight at under 75 kg for openweight events or 72.5 kg for lightweight events, those weigh-in thresholds govern racing eligibility regardless of how the handicapped score reads. It also does not project on-water boat speed. Water performance turns on rigging, water conditions and crew synchronisation, and a strong handicapped score is a necessary but not sufficient input.
