Petone Rowing Club rows from a clubhouse on The Esplanade along the Petone foreshore in Lower Hutt. Formed in 1900, it is run by volunteers under a member elected committee and has around 70 members.
The club runs a novice squad, a club squad for intermediate, club and senior rowers, and a masters squad for rowers aged 27 and over. A 12 week learn to row programme teaches basic technique and safety on the water. Crews race at regattas around New Zealand, including the National Club Championships, and school pupils coached by club coaches row for their schools at the North Island Secondary School Championships and the Maadi Regatta.
Club history includes Jack McCarten, selected for New Zealand at the 1950 Empire Games, Geoff Benge at the 1962 Empire Games and Des Lock at the 1974 World Championships. In 1977 the club won the New Zealand championship eights title, and St Bernard's College rowed from the club between 1982 and 1992.
