About this club

Star Boating Club rows from Whairepo Lagoon, next to Taranaki Street Wharf on the Wellington waterfront. Founded in 1866, it is Wellington's oldest rowing club.

Local boat owners joined together in 1866 to form the Star Regatta Club, later renamed Star Boating Club. The present clubhouse was completed in 1887 and built on skids so it could be moved. It was towed to a new site in 1889 and moved again in 1989 to its current position by the lagoon, where it is listed as a Category A historic building.

Adult membership runs from novice to masters, and school rowers from Wellington College, Wellington East Girls' College, Wellington Girls' College, Queen Margaret College and Scots College are based at the club. Learn to Row courses for adults run from time to time. Crews race at the NZ National Rowing Championships, the Maadi Cup, the NZ Universities championship and the NZ Masters championships.

Star won its first national title in 1891, when J.G. Duncan and A.S. Bliss took the New Zealand double sculls championship in Wanganui. Star rowers have since represented New Zealand at world championships and the Olympic Games.
