Rotorua Rowing Club rows on Lake Rotorua from the Rotorua Lakes Watersports Trust building on the city lakefront. Crews train on the western side of the lake, from the city past Ngongotahā township to the northern side, on water the club describes as generally shallow and safe.
Rowing has taken place in Rotorua since 1904, and the club was incorporated in 1962. It brings together club rowers, school rowers from the Rotorua high schools, a masters group and a community rowing programme. Because local schools do not usually have the numbers to run rowing on their own, the club provides the equipment, facilities and training for all of them.
Newcomers can start with a free Try Row Experience for teens and adults, followed by an on-water Learn to Row course. Active members range in age from 12 to over 80, and the club also runs coxswain training for young coxes.
Annual events include a corporate challenge, the Blue Lake 1000 Regatta in October and the Dewar Shield Blue Lake Regatta at Lake Tikitapu in late January.
