About this club

Union Boat Club rows on the Whanganui River from its boatshed at 1C Taupo Quay in central Whanganui. The club was established in 1877 and caters for both sweep oar rowing and sculling.

It has programmes for club, school, novice, masters and recreational rowers. Pupils from Whanganui Girls College, Cullinane College and Whanganui City College row for the club at club regattas and for their schools at secondary school regattas, including the Maadi Cup. New rowers can take a free trial of three rows, and the club has run adult Learn to Row courses of 10 sessions, including one in February 2024.

The boatshed has a gym, showers and boat storage, and an upstairs hall fronting the river is available for hire. The club can host training camps for other rowing clubs and offers accommodation to out-of-town clubs at regattas on the Whanganui River.

Union Boat Club crews have won many New Zealand titles, and athletes and coaches from the club have represented New Zealand in international competition. Rebecca Scown, Phillipa Baker-Hogan, Richard Tonks and Calvin Fergusson are among its current and former members.
