About this club

Whanganui High School rowing runs through an arrangement with the Aramoho Whanganui Rowing Club in Aramoho, Whanganui, which gives students use of the club's facilities and coaching. Students can join as rowers or as coxswains, and every rower starts as a novice.

The season starts in September or October and ends in March or April after the Maadi Cup regatta, and new rowers begin with a Learn to Row programme. Summer training is on Saturday or Sunday mornings plus three or four evenings a week, and coaches run indoor fitness classes in winter where possible.

Crews race at local and national regattas, with the strongest considered for the North Island Secondary Schools Championships at Lake Karapiro and the Maadi Cup. In 2024 the school won the North Island Secondary Schools title for the first time, sharing the Derbyshire Shield with Hamilton Boys' High School after six golds, three silvers and three bronzes. It won its first Maadi Cup gold medal in eight years in 2024 and another gold in 2025, and won the most medals, 13, at the 2025 North Island championships while placing fourth overall.
