Wakatipu High School's rowing programme is run by Whakatipu Rowing Club from its base on Lake Hayes near Queenstown. Students row for the club at club events and for Wakatipu High School at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships and the Maadi Cup, and fees and registrations go through the club.
The club attracts up to 50 Wakatipu High School students a year, with coaches running age group squads from under 15 to under 18 as well as novice crews. Crews are formed by age group each season to suit the students who join. An open day in early September introduces new students to the sport, and pre-season training starts in Term 3.
Training runs before and after school and at weekends. Regattas start in Term 4 and build through Term 1 to the South Island Secondary Schools Championships in early March and the Maadi Cup at the end of March. Wakatipu High School entered crews in the 2026 Maadi Regatta on Lake Ruataniwha.
