About this club

Wellington Girls' College rowing, known at the school as WGC Rowing, trains out of Star Boating Club, the Wellington club based on Whairepo Lagoon next to Taranaki St Wharf. Early in the season the girls compete for Star Boating Club, then represent the school at inter-school regattas.

Each season the programme takes around 15 new novice rowers and coxswains from Years 9 to 12, and no experience is needed. Novices start with a four-week Learn to Row programme. The season runs from September to March, with novice training of four to five sessions a week, about two hours each, mostly after school and some weekends.

The season includes a spring camp, a Labour Weekend camp, a five-day summer camp and regattas at Lake Karapiro, among them the North Island Secondary Schools regatta, before the NZ Secondary Schools championships (Maadi Cup). The school says the programme has produced rowers who went on to row for colleges in the USA and to represent New Zealand.
