About this club

Whakatipu Rowing Club rows on Lake Hayes near Queenstown, with its clubhouse at the Lake Hayes A&P Showgrounds.

The club runs a secondary school programme that takes up to 50 Wakatipu High School students each year. Coaches provide age group squad training, and crews race in U15, U16, U17, U18 and novice events at local, regional and national level. The club offers Learn to Row.

Rowing continues after school through recreational and competitive club rowing, and the club's competitive club rowers have won medals at national regattas. Masters rowing is open from the year a rower turns 27, with races held over 1000m.

Rowing in the area dates back to 1908 and the first regatta. In 1985 the club was based in the bath house on Queenstown Bay before moving to Lake Hayes, where a new shed was built mostly by volunteer labour. That shed forms the core of the present building, which has since been extended.
