About this club

Glasgow Schools Rowing Club was founded in 1942 to promote rowing among pupils at Glasgow's senior secondary schools, originally rowing out of the Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club on the River Clyde. In 1951 it moved to the East Boathouse on Glasgow Green, a building dating from 1924, and at its height in the early 1960s served around 18 schools across the city. The club is a collective of Glasgow schools, and membership fees from its school members provide a large share of its income as a registered Scottish charity. It is established as a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation), Scottish charity number SC047806, and is affiliated to Scottish Rowing, the sport's national governing body in Scotland. In the OSCR charity register the entity is now recorded under the name Glasgow Scullers Rowing Club SCIO, having previously been registered as Glasgow Schools Rowing Club SCIO. After a decline in membership through the 1970s, the club was revived from 2007 following the introduction of indoor rowing to Glasgow secondary schools, and by 2020 it again drew rowers from around seven schools, including St Mungo's, Hutchesons' Grammar, St Aloysius', Lourdes Secondary and Kelvinside Academy. Through this schools network the club gives young people a route into competitive rowing; its crews have included national champions at the British Rowing Junior Championships. The club rows on the River Clyde at Glasgow Green, sharing its Glasgow Schools East boathouse base over the years with Glasgow Academy Boat Club and Glasgow University Boat Club. The historic East Boathouse, built in 1924, was demolished in early 2026.
