What is Stroke Rate?
Stroke rate is the per-minute cadence the cox box, NK SpeedCoach and Concept2 PM5 monitor display, in strokes per minute (spm). Typical US bands run from 18 spm in UT2 steady-state work to 44 spm in a sprint finish. Rate is a cadence, not a speed.
Definition and units
Stroke rate is measured in strokes per minute (spm). One stroke is one complete cycle of catch, drive, finish and recovery. A crew rating 32 spm completes 32 full cycles in 60 seconds. The number is a cadence number, not a speed number. It tells you how often the crew is taking a stroke, not how fast the boat is moving.
Every cox box, every NK SpeedCoach GPS unit and every Concept2 PM5 monitor displays stroke rate live, updated each stroke and usually shown to one decimal place (32.4 spm) in the main display field. The cox calls rate from the cox box display; the bow seat in a coxless 4- or pair reads it off the SpeedCoach mounted on the rigger or the gunwale.
How stroke rate is measured
In a coxed shell, a small magnetic sensor on the stroke seat's slide triggers each time the seat reaches the catch. The cox box counts triggers and displays the per-minute rate on the screen, refreshed each stroke. The same magnet feeds the rate channel on any GPS unit wired into the cox box.
On a Concept2 RowErg the PM5 monitor derives rate from the position and timing of the chain pull. The same screen shows split, watts and calories per hour live during every piece. The PM5 logs rate for every stroke across the whole session and the file syncs to Concept2 Logbook, ErgData or the Row HQ training record automatically once the monitor is in range.
GPS-only units without a slide magnet (NK SpeedCoach GPS Sculler 2, Coxmate GPS) derive rate from the boat's velocity pattern. The shell surges forward on each drive, so the GPS picks out individual strokes from the surge profile in the velocity trace and converts to spm. Useful in single sculls and 4-s where wiring a slide magnet to a cox box is not practical.
Typical stroke rates by training type
Standard US training and racing bands, broadly consistent across NCAA varsity, IRA-grade and prep school programs:
- UT2 (steady-state aerobic): 18 to 22 spm. The bulk of fall and winter aerobic volume.
- UT1 (firm aerobic): 22 to 26 spm. Higher-quality aerobic work, lactate-threshold development.
- AT (anaerobic threshold): 26 to 30 spm. Threshold pieces, sustained race-pace simulation.
- HOCR head-race pace: 28 to 32 spm. The rate Championship Eights settle at across a 4,800m HOCR run.
- C.R.A.S.H.-B and IRA race pace: 36 to 40 spm. The settled rate through the middle 1k of a 2k.
- Start sequence or sprint finish: 40 to 44 spm. The first 20 strokes from a standing start at IRA, and the closing 250m through the finish line.

Drive-recovery ratio across the rate band
Each stroke has a drive phase (blade in the water, athlete loading force) and a recovery phase (slide back to the catch, blade out of the water). The proportion of cycle time spent on each shifts with rate. At 20 spm in a long UT2 piece the recovery runs two to three seconds and the drive runs under a second, so the ratio sits at 1:2 or 1:3.
At 38 spm in the middle of an IRA 2k the recovery has shortened to roughly the same length as the drive. Crews that keep the longest recovery they can at race rate get more boat run per stroke than crews that compress the slide, and that shows up as a faster split for the same drive force. Cox calls like "long slides at the rate" target exactly this dynamic.
How rate affects boat speed
Stroke rate and boat speed are linked through distance per stroke (DPS). DPS = boat speed divided by stroke rate. The same crew can hit the same split with high DPS at a low rate (long, powerful strokes) or with low DPS at a high rate (short, choppy strokes). The fastest crews maximize DPS first, then build rate on top of it.
Above a certain rate (usually around 40 spm for an established US senior crew, lower for prep school and novice crews) additional rate costs power because the recovery is now too short to set up the next drive cleanly. The boat actually slows down. Coaches and crews find the optimal race rate empirically through rate-locked pieces (4 x 1k at 32, at 34, at 36, at 38) and pick the rate that produced the fastest split. Going above the empirical optimum makes the boat slower and burns the crew before the finish line.
Rate ladders and rate-locked training
Rate ladders are the standard US training format for building rate familiarity. The crew rows 5 minutes at 18, 5 at 20, 5 at 22, 5 at 24, 5 at 26, climbing through the operational rate band. Rate-locked pieces (4 x 1k at 32 spm, or 6 x 500m at 36 spm) train the crew to hold a target rate under pressure and surface the rate at which boat speed peaks.

What is the difference between stroke rate and boat speed?
Stroke rate is a cadence number, displayed in strokes per minute. Boat speed is a velocity number, displayed in meters per second or as a 500m split on the PM5 or SpeedCoach. They are related but they are not the same. The same crew can hit the same 500m split at a low rate with long, powerful strokes or at a high rate with short, choppy strokes. Distance per stroke (boat speed divided by stroke rate) is usually a more honest measure of crew efficiency than rate alone.
What is the drive-recovery ratio?
The proportion of cycle time spent on the drive (blade in the water) versus the recovery (slide back to the catch). At low rates the recovery is two to three times longer than the drive, giving a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio. At C.R.A.S.H.-B race pace the recovery shortens and the ratio runs close to 1:1. Crews that hold the longest controlled recovery they can at race rate keep more boat run per stroke and post faster splits for the same drive force.

Does a higher stroke rate always mean faster?
No. Above the rate at which a crew can still apply full drive force, additional rate costs power because the recovery is now too short to set up the next drive cleanly. The boat actually slows down. US college programs work out the optimal race rate empirically through rate-locked pieces (4 x 1k at 32, at 34, at 36, at 38) and pick the rate that produced the fastest split. Going above that rate makes the boat slower, not faster.
