The rowing scene in Chester
Chester has one of the most concentrated rowing scenes in England - six clubs share roughly 200m of riverbank on The Groves, all rowing on the same straight, broad stretch of the River Dee. The city is also the home of Chester Regatta (1733), claimed as the oldest rowing regatta in the world, and Royal Chester Rowing Club (1838), one of the oldest surviving rowing clubs in the UK.

The River Dee at Chester is a famously straight, sheltered rowing reach. The racecourse runs upstream from The Groves through Earls Eye Meadow, with around 5km of rowable water through to Eccleston Ferry - used by every senior head race in the city. Above the weir the river is non-tidal and held at a steady level by the Old Dee Bridge, giving Chester some of the most consistent rowing water in the country.
