Armidale Rowing Club is based at the Rogers and Sypkens Boat Shed on Malpas Dam, about 30 kilometres north of Armidale. It provides sculling and sweep rowing to people aged 13 and over from the Armidale and Guyra areas, with club rows on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
An earlier local club formed in 1978 but did not sustain its activity. In 1987, Tim Rogers brought a coxed four and members of Grafton Rowing Club to assess possible Northern Tablelands venues; Armidale Rowing Club was then founded in 1988.
The club recorded its first competitive regatta success at Taree in 1990. Its inaugural regatta followed on 5 April 1992 and expanded to include a Northern Rivers versus Central Districts challenge and sculling races for New England Girls' School and The Armidale School.
The Learn to Row course combines an initial five-week programme with two months of preliminary membership. It starts with a free taster, continues through coached water sessions and gives learners a development path towards rowing with experienced members as either social or competitive rowers.
Membership categories include senior, student, junior, casual and Learn to Row. Competitive members also need Rowing NSW membership, while experienced former school or club rowers are invited to arrange a meeting before returning.
The club describes Malpas Dam as Australia's highest-altitude full 2,000-metre rowing course. It also maintains a members-only indoor rowing room at 113 Jessie Street in Armidale, supplementing the boatshed and water programme at Black Mountain.
