Balmain Rowing Club rows on Iron Cove from 21 White Street, Balmain. The club has occupied its White Horse Point site since its first year and describes itself as one of Australia's oldest rowing clubs.
Balmain was formed at a meeting in Dicks Hotel on 7 June 1882. A boatshed site was secured, a new building was commissioned, and the Mayor of Balmain formally opened the club on 25 November that year.
The club was competing successfully at state and interstate level by the 1890s. Stuart Amess, Harry Hauenstein and Thomas Parker represented Australia at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, the first Games at which Australia entered a rowing team. Balmain also won the NSW premiership in 1910 to 1911, 1911 to 1912 and again when the competition resumed in 1919 to 1920.
Membership covers competitive and recreational rowers, juniors, students, coaches, coxswains and social supporters. Beginner programmes run during the year, and active members have access to coached squad training, club boats, ergs and gym equipment.
A volunteer building committee began planning the clubhouse restoration in 2008. A separate south wing opened in 2012, the first extension in 132 years, and an east-wing extension for rower amenities and coaching space was completed in 2026. The club also maintains an archive of regattas, championship crews and Olympic history dating back to the 1890s.
