About this club
Black Mountain Rowing Club is at the western end of Lake Burley Griffin on Black Mountain Peninsula, next to Canberra's principal rowing course. Its official site describes a community club of about 160 members, open to experienced, returning, competitive and recreational rowers.
The club's site dates its establishment to 1965 and records an early base in the Kingston Boat Harbour Nissen Hut. A detailed club history traces the later incorporated line through Eastern Suburbs Rowing Club, Narrabundah Rowing Club and the adoption of the Black Mountain name in December 1999.
The Black Mountain Peninsula shed was completed in December 1991. Toilets and showers were added by 1998, and the relocation gave the club a permanent base after its Kingston years.
Members compete locally and interstate, including at the Australian Masters Rowing Championships and Head of the Yarra. The club says it has ranked strongly in masters point scores despite competing against clubs with larger memberships.
Black Mountain no longer runs its own learn-to-row courses. Those programmes now operate through Red Shed, a partner facility which opened on the peninsula in July 2024 and includes rowing programmes, indoor rowing, a public gym, cafe and event space. Black Mountain rows from part of Red Shed's boat storage while continuing to use its existing shed.
