Cairns Rowing Club rows from Trawler Base Road in Portsmith on Trinity Inlet. It serves Cairns and the surrounding region and is affiliated with Rowing Queensland.
Rowing in Cairns began in 1930 from a shed beside Trinity Inlet, but that earlier club disbanded after its shed was resumed during the Second World War. The present organisation dates from a 1995 public meeting called by Bill O'Chee.
Barron Blades Rowing Club formed later in 1995 and incorporated in August 1996. It initially rowed on the upper Barron River at Kuranda, using borrowed boats and a trailer, and ran Saturday Learn to Row sessions and a school programme.
The club moved to Trinity Inlet, signed a lease for a permanent site after a three-year search, and opened its new facility on 16 May 2001. It formally adopted the Cairns Rowing Club name in October 2003.
Current membership covers different ages and competitive levels. The club supplies sweep and sculling boats, operates a boat-booking system, and runs training, development and capsize-recovery programmes. Members race on the North Queensland circuit and at state, national and World Masters championships.
A Cairns men's four won the Queensland state championship at Wivenhoe Dam in 1998. The club started the Head of the Trinity Inlet endurance event in 2010 and continues to identify it as its North Queensland signature event.
