About this club
Commercial Rowing Club is a Brisbane River club based in Jane Street, West End. Founded in 1877, it describes itself as Queensland's oldest sporting club with a continuous active existence.
Early Commercial crews won Queensland champion fours and eights and supplied athletes to Intercolonial eights. The club also advocated for the creation of a Queensland rowing association while moving between six boatsheds in its first period.
Its men's eight won Queensland titles in 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1911, 1912 and 1914. From 1984 through 1989, Commercial won every Queensland Championship men's eight, while its women won the championship eight in 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985 and 1986.
The 1980s produced 20 Australian selections, followed by 35 in the 1990s, 17 from 2000 to 2009 and 42 from 2010 to 2019. The club's published timeline also records international gold medals and multiple winning Head of the Yarra crews across those periods.
Commercial welcomes novices and experienced athletes of all ages. Rowing Australia's directory lists adult learn-to-row, social and competitive pathways spanning juniors, Masters and elite rowers, with competition at local, interstate and international regattas.
The current club calendar includes South Queensland schools racing and regattas hosted by Brisbane State High School, Brisbane Girls Grammar, St Margaret's and Lourdes Hill College. A Future Fund supports the long-term provision of its clubhouse, boating facility, rowing programs, athletes and coaches.
