Innisfail, Queensland

About this club

Innisfail Rowing Club is listed by Rowing Australia at Fitzgerald Esplanade, Innisfail, on the Johnstone River. Rowing Queensland also includes Innisfail among its current North Queensland clubs.

The available current club listing describes social and competitive still-water rowing. A public directory gives Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions and Saturday morning rowing, although the club does not maintain a public website that could confirm those hours.

Innisfail has a long rowing record, but the sources do not establish uninterrupted continuity of one organisation. Australian Rowing History records Innisfail Rowing Club affiliating during the 1930-31 Queensland season.

Queensland championship racing was held on the Johnstone River at Innisfail. The Champion Fours was staged there in November 1935, and the river hosted the same state title over two miles on 30 October 1949.

Historical results also place Innisfail crews in Queensland championship competition away from home. An Innisfail under-20 four contested the 1938 state title at Rockhampton, and Innisfail raced in the Champion Four there in 1939.

After Cyclone Larry, a Queensland employment programme included Innisfail Rowing Club among more than 60 community sites where participants cleared debris, maintained facilities and repaired damage in 2006.
