About this club
Mackay Rowing Club is a community club on the Pioneer River at Pleystowe, about 15 kilometres west of Mackay. A Queensland government provider list places the club on Pleystowe Connection Road, while current reporting identifies its base at Balnagowan Bridge.
The club says it caters for people aged 14 and over. Members include competitors training for medals and rowers who prefer exercise, relaxation and social rowing, using boats from single sculls to sweep eights.
New rowers must complete a Learn to Row course before applying for membership. People with previous experience can arrange a trial row, and the club also registers participants in school Learn to Row programmes.
At the 2023 Queensland State Masters Championships, Mackay members Jane Deguara and Therese Clancy each won single-scull gold, then won the doubles and a composite quad. Richard McGrath and Mick Wohlfhart joined them for mixed-quad bronze, while two mixed doubles won silver.
The club's masters mixed quad was named Senior Team of the Year at the North Queensland Sports Awards in 2023. A report from that year recorded 32 members meeting three or four times a week.
Therese Clancy later won the 2024 Australian Masters lightweight G single title. She also won another national gold in the women's F double and silver in the ladies G double.
