About this club
Newcastle Rowing Club rows from 34 Tully Street, Carrington, beside Throsby Creek. The club says its membership spans school students to retired adults and includes both recreational rowers and competitors who race at local, state and national regattas.
The club's history began in 1870. Australian Rowing History records active eras in 1870-1874, 1880-1896 and 1940-1941, followed by the present era from 1992.
Jim Bardakos and Val Kost jointly founded the modern club in 1992. It initially operated from a boat trailer, moved among sheds on the southern side of Newcastle Harbour, obtained development consent beside Throsby Creek in February 2009 and then built its own boatshed.
Current programmes listed by the club include a Junior Development Squad, Learn to Row, Turn Up and Row and indoor rowing. New rowers can begin with Learn to Row, while returning rowers can arrange to get back on the water through the club.
Newcastle has run an annual Central Districts Rowing Association regatta since the 1993-94 season. The club has hosted the CDRA Sprint Championships on Throsby Creek since 2002 and also lists Bustles and ERGtober among its club events.
Rowing Australia named Newcastle its 2021 Club of the Year after a reported 59 per cent membership increase. In 2022, member Susan Kemp won bronze at the virtual World Indoor Rowing Championships, which drew competitors from 66 countries.
