About this club

Shoalhaven Rowing Club is based at Paringa Park on Scenic Drive, Nowra, beside the Shoalhaven River. Its own river guide describes launching from the clubhouse and navigating upstream on the Shoalhaven.

A local account traces organised rowing on the river to a regatta on 26 January 1855 and the formation of a club in 1891. It credits the earlier club with world champion scullers John McLean and James Stanbury, then reports that the club disbanded during the Second World War.

The same history says the organisation reopened in 1977 with local government and community funding. Its first regatta after reopening was held on 28 October 1978.

The club welcomes people who want to learn, row socially for fitness or compete. Its membership material lists senior, junior, family, supporting and temporary membership, alongside separate Learn to Row categories for adults and juniors and indoor rowing lessons.

The annual Shoalhaven sprint regatta was in its 35th year in 2013. That programme combined 400-metre timed sprints with a seven-kilometre head race and drew clubs from elsewhere in New South Wales.

A 2024 Shoalhaven City Council facilities survey recorded use of all parts of the club facility for 40 to 49 hours a week, with activity across every day of the week except Friday and increased use expected during the following year.
