About this club
St George Rowing Club is a competitive club based at 21 Verona Range, Como. Its crews train and race from Scylla Bay on the Georges River, while the parent registered club trades as Rowers on Cooks River at Wolli Creek.
The club was formed by 24 rowing members in 1957 to finance the sport. Membership grew to 200 in 1962, when its first clubhouse opened on the Cooks River.
Rowing moved to Scylla Bay in 1973 after airport-bridge construction and increasing siltation affected the Cooks River base. A new licensed clubhouse opened on the Cooks River in 1979, but training and competition continued from Como.
The club supports rowers from juniors through to masters, with full, under-18, learn-to-row, visitor, temporary and gym memberships. A recent report described members from age 14 into their eighties and a school partnership used to bring more young rowers into the programme.
St George has won state and national titles and produced six Olympians. In 2017, 20 members at the NSW Masters Championships collected 11 gold, ten silver and three bronze medals, part of a season total of 82 first places, 95 seconds and 67 thirds.
