About this club
Sydney University Boat Club trains from the Thyne Reid Boatshed at Linley Point and a second boathouse at Glebe. The club was established in 1860 and is one of Australia's oldest university sporting clubs.
SUBC began inter-university competition in the nineteenth century and developed rowers at university, state, national and international level. Its present Thyne Reid Boatshed was completed in February 2017 after the previous Burns Bay shed was destroyed by fire in 2006.
The men's and women's university clubs agreed to merge under the Sydney University Boat Club name in September 2015. The Linley Point facility supports the student and performance squads, while Glebe is used for masters, inter-collegiate, schoolgirl, social and learn-to-row activity.
Current programmes include competitive rowing from first-year post-school athletes through to Olympic contenders, lower-intensity club rowing, an annual learn-to-row course and a school winter programme. The club competes in NSW regattas, state and national championships and the Australian Boat Race against Melbourne University.
SUBC finished fourth at the 2025 Australian Rowing Championships, where Phoebe Teale led the athlete medal table with five golds. The club has also recorded national point-score wins in 2019, 2021 and 2023 and NSW state point-score wins in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.
