About this club
Toowong Rowing Club is a Brisbane River club at 37 Keith Street, St Lucia. Founded on 22 October 1889, it now serves juniors, high-performance athletes, Masters and recreational rowers and has more than 250 competitive and social members.
The first clubhouse opened in March 1890 and was washed away that month. A replacement reopened in June, only to be lost in the February 1893 flood, after which the club disbanded. It reformed in 1910 and again in 1924 after another inactive period.
Toowong won the Queensland champion eight in 1912 and 1926, and the champion four in 1926. Its clubhouse was washed away again in January 1974, leading to the opening of the present Keith Street base on 3 July 1976.
Current programs cover Queensland pathway and inter-regional squads, youth and high performance, coxing, veterans and Masters, school leavers, return-to-row and adult learn-to-row. The six-week beginner course teaches both single and crew-boat basics.
The club has a gym and function centre and hosts the annual Head of the Brisbane. Its event plan describes a roughly ten-kilometre time trial on the Brisbane River, while club sponsorship material reports more than 500 school and club competitors.
Senior Toowong rowers include dual Olympian Haimish Karrasch, an eight-time national champion and 1999 world silver medallist, and Amy James, a two-time national champion and 2017 world silver medallist. Both are identified as Toowong club rowers in their published profiles.
