Waitemata Rowing Club rows from its clubrooms at the end of Taipari Strand on the Te Atatu Peninsula in West Auckland. Founded in 1883 as the Waitemata Boating Club, it describes itself as the original rowing club of West Auckland and the second oldest rowing club in Auckland.
The club has school, club and masters squads, with masters coaching for rowers over 27. Training runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons and from 7.30am at weekends, and squads hold a training camp at Lake Maraetai, Mangakino, from 26 December to 2 January.
The building has a boathouse for boats, trailers and maintenance, and clubrooms with a gym, ergs, changing rooms, a kitchen and a lounge. The club's last move was from Okahu Bay at Orakei to Te Atatu.
Darcy Hadfield, a Waitemata member, won bronze in the single sculls at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, the first Olympic rowing medal won by a New Zealander.
