What is a Cox Box?

A cox box is the amplification and metrics unit the cox runs during every practice and race: speakers wired down the spine of the shell, microphone on the cox's headset, and live stroke rate, split and GPS distance on the display. The NK CoxBox has been the US standard since the late 1980s.

What is inside a cox box and what it connects to

The cox box itself is a small handheld unit, roughly the size of a paperback, containing a lithium-ion battery, an amplifier, a microcontroller and an LCD or OLED display. It plugs into a permanent wiring loom installed in the shell, which in turn connects to:

  • A headset microphone the cox wears, plugged into the front of the unit.
  • Speakers mounted along the spine of the shell, usually one per rower in an 8+ and two or three in a 4+.
  • A stroke rate magnet mounted on the stroke seat's slide that triggers each time the seat reaches the catch.
  • Front-panel controls for power, mode, timer and (on GPS units) screen mode and lap markers.

GPS-enabled units add a GPS antenna inside the case and connect to satellite for live boat speed, 500m split and distance covered. The same units log every stroke of every practice to internal storage, which syncs to a paired laptop via USB or Bluetooth after the row.

Models and US pricing

Nielsen Kellerman (NK) is the dominant US manufacturer. The current product line, in rising order of capability and USD price:

  • CoxBox Mini: entry-level voice amplification plus stroke rate and timer. Smaller and lighter than the Pro. Around USD 525. Common in high school novice fleets and as backup units in college boathouses.
  • CoxBox Pro: the standard NCAA varsity model. Larger display, storable presets, longer battery, more weather-resistant casing. Around USD 650 to 700. The default unit in most college boathouses on the Charles, the Schuylkill, the Cooper and Mercer Lake.
  • CoxBox GPS: Pro features plus GPS-derived boat speed, 500m split, distance covered, and session logging that syncs to a laptop after practice. Around USD 800 to 850. Standard for IRA-grade programs and any squad serious about pace data review.

Alternatives include the Coxmate GPS (Australian-made, gaining ground in US college boathouses, similar price to the CoxBox GPS), the NK SpeedCoach GPS 2 (NK's smaller GPS-only unit, used by sculling crews and as a backup readout when a CoxBox fails mid-practice), and various StrokeCoach amplifier units. The NK CoxBox brand still owns the majority of US college and prep school market share.

How US crews use the cox box

In practice, the cox uses the box to amplify calls during drills, manage rate during rate-ladder pieces, and time intervals. The live stroke rate readout lets the cox verify the crew is at the prescribed rate during steady-state work without guessing. The timer anchors interval pieces (5 x 5 minutes, 8 x 500m, 4 x 1k) and lap markers tag each piece for later review.

In racing the cox box becomes the cox's tactical instrument. They call rate changes ("up two for the next twenty") and pressure shifts through the microphone, and verify on the display that the crew has executed each call. On a GPS unit, the cox watches the 500m split alongside the rate to track whether a rate change is producing the speed gain it should. Coach tools let the head coach review the full session data after the row when GPS units are in use, so any rate or split discrepancy across the lineup gets surfaced before the next race.

Fleet maintenance and care

Cox boxes live in a hostile environment: rivers, salt water at the Head of the Charles or the San Diego Crew Classic, mud at the Cooper, freezing rain on the Schuylkill in February. Basic fleet maintenance:

  • Rinse connectors with fresh water after every practice. Salt and silt destroy contacts fast.
  • Charge on a regular cycle. Lithium-ion units run 8 to 10 hours per charge, so a daily or every-other-day cycle covers most college practice schedules.
  • Replace headset microphones when they crackle, cut out or start picking up wind. Mics are the most-replaced consumable on any cox box fleet.
  • Store dry. Never leave a cox box in a wet kit bag overnight. Programs that ignore this lose units to corrosion at a steady rate.

Most NCAA varsity and prep school programs run a sign-out log so coxes know which unit they are assigned, whether it is charged, and whether it has any known faults. Origin and history

Peter Klavora and the engineering team at Nielsen Kellerman built the first CoxBox in 1985 outside Philadelphia, replacing the megaphones and battery-powered amplifiers US coxes had used since the 1960s. The original unit combined voice amplification with the first reliable electronic stroke rate display, and it transformed US college coxing within a few seasons. Rate calls became precise rather than estimated by ear, every athlete from bow to stern heard the cox at the same volume regardless of wind, and the head coach finally had a number to point to when reviewing rate execution after a piece. The NK CoxBox has dominated US college and prep school rowing ever since.

Most varsity programs run a fleet of three to six units, assigned to specific shells, with a sign-out tracker for whichever cox is taking out which boat that day.

How do you connect a cox box?
